"Little League Elbow" - When to rest your young pitcher

Baseball season is upon us. Young baseball players, especially pitchers, may experience “Little League Elbow.”

The elbow is a joint where the upper arm bone (humerus) meets the two bones of the lower arm (Ulna and Radius). The elbow is a hinge and pivot joint. The hinge part of the joint allows the elbow to bend; the pivot part allows the lower arm to rotate. The throwing motion combines elbow flexion/extension and rotation. The repetitive forces from the above motion may pull tiny bone fragments away from the humerus. This can disrupt normal bone growth resulting in deformity.

This occurs when repetitive throwing creates a strong pull of the tendons and ligaments at the elbow growth plate. Growth plates are made of soft cartilage, and therefore are not as tolerant to forces as ligaments, tendons, or mature bone. It is generally the weak link for young pitchers.

The young athlete will complain of pain at the bump on the inside of the elbow. They may also complain of decrease range of motion. Pain is generally worse during and after pitching.

To help prevent ‘Little League Elbow’ all children should be limited in the number of pitches thrown per day. The USA Baseball Medical and Safety Advisory Committee have
published guidelines for maximum pitch counts based on age.

How much rest do youth pitchers need?
Rest is a critical part to preventing injury. Below are charts to indicate proper rest time. Rest time indicates rest from pitching only. The athlete may play other positions on their ‘rest days.’

If a child is complaining of elbow pain and/or restricted range of motion you should have them rest for a few days. If symptoms persist or reoccur when throwing is resumed discontinue throwing and consult a Sports Medicine Physician. The earlier an injury is diagnosed, the earlier treatment can begin. The result is everyone’s goal; shorter healing time and faster return to pitching.

Under Armour and USA Football team up

Under Armour, Inc. which outfits and warms some of the top athletes around the world, just signed a deal to dress youngsters playing football.

Vienna-based USA Football, the sport’s national governing body on youth and amateur levels, had no previous outfitter prior to the deal with the Baltimore-based sportswear apparel company (NYSE: UA).

“It’s a partnership that goes through 2009 with a mix of cash, performance apparel and media,” said Steve Alic, director of communications for USA Football. “Under Armour represents a ground-breaking outfitter partnership for USA Football’s national team program.”

USA Football recently picked Chicago-based Riddell as its official football helmet and protective equipment partner.

USA Football will conduct more than 100 football training events nationwide this year that UA will provide apparel for.

USA’s members that benefit from the training sessions include coaches, game officials and league administrators, who reside in every state and D.C.

The partnership also gives UA the exclusive right to outfit USA Football’s 2009 Junior National Team, America’s first high school-aged national team in football. It will compete this summer, dressed in Under Armour uniforms, against seven other nations at the world championship in Ohio.

UA will also participate in USA Football’s grant program, which awards uniforms and equipment grants each year to youth leagues and high school football programs, based on merit and need.
UA’s existing youth partnerships include the Under Armour High School Football All-America Game, and it recently amped up its relationships with universities.

Late last year, Under Armour inked a deal to spend $11 million over five years to outfit the entire Texas Tech University athletic program.

In September, Under Armour and the University of Maryland athletic department announced a five-year, $17.5 million all-apparel pact.

Athletes, coaches, and even armchair quarterbacks know that successful athletes need conditioning. But did you realize that they need ‘air’ conditioning?

One of the most dangerous health risks to football players has always been the risk of heat stroke. Two years ago, after having gone through the tragedy of losing an athlete to heat related complications during practice, Physicians and scientists from the University of Florida immediately began researching a means to prevent this dangerous and sometimes fatal condition.

It was determined that the air temperature under the players’ shoulder pads often reached dangerously high levels leading to severe dehydration through perspiration. Although players frequently removed their helmets, this only fooled their bodies into thinking that they were cooler, when in fact, the temperature surrounding the player’s body remained dangerously elevated.

It was farther determined that the way to alleviate this condition was to lower temperature of the body’s core. The researchers found that they were able to successfully cool the body core by passing cool air over the strategic areas of the player’s shoulder and back.
Dr. Nik Gravenstein from the University of Florida came up with the concept of a pad that players could wear that would address the real issue of heat-related illness. This invention was brought to Fred Williams of Williams Sports Group, LLC of Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Williams has invented numerous protective designs which are being used by numerous NFL and college football programs.
Fred Williams developed an ‘air flow channel system’ which, when built into the protective cushion of an existing shoulder pad would provide a unique system of air delivery. This system is the revolutionary new ‘Temperature Management System’ (TMS).

In the TMS system, cool, dry air effectively lowers his core body temperature, keeping it from rising to dangerous levels. The device was field tested by University of Florida research scientists and has been incorporated into the Douglas Custom Pro and Riddell Power Shoulder Pads.

Heat related illness is second only to head injuries as a cause of death among athletes in the United States.
The TMS system will replace the air across a players chest and back over 100 times per minute.
A rise in body temperature is also associated with a decline in athletic performance.

    Matt Barkley: The 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior quarterback threw for

3,576 yards and 35 touchdowns, completing 63 percent of his passes

(214-of-340) against just nine interceptions. The first junior captain in

Mater Dei history, Barkley averaged 325 yards and 3.2 touchdown passes per

game in leading the Monarchs (9-2) to the quarterfinals of PAC-5 Division

Southern Section 2007 Football Championships, where they fell to Serra

League top seed Crespi Carmelite High. Barkley has maintained a 3.77 GPA in

placing her in the top five percent of her class. Price donates her time as

Adidas worked with Wariner for more than two years to create the revolutionary adidas Lone Star spike, which is named after Wariner’s home state of Texas. In addition to Jeremy’s new logo, the adidas Innovation Team introduces multiple pioneering technologies in this spike, making this the most technologically advanced and one of the lightest spikes to-date. The Lone Star is the world’s first asymmetrical 400m spike, featuring the first ever full-length carbon nanotubes reinforced plate and the exclusive adidas progressive-compression spike.

“We spent more than two years working with Jeremy Wariner, the best curve runner in the world to design the adidas Lone Star,” said Mic Lussier, adidas Innovation Team Leader, adidas America. “We know long-sprint races are won and lost in the curves so we looked at what he already does best and from there created the finest curve running shoes in the world. The adidas Lone Star allows Jeremy to push even better in the turn and provides him with even more physical confidence, stability and efficiency.”

World’s First Asymmetrical 400m Spikes

After studying Wariner’s running pattern in the adidas labs through high-speed video and pressure mapping, adidas worked with him to create something entirely new in long-sprint running. The adidas team of advanced engineers, designers and biomechanists were able to see how differently Wariner uses each foot as he runs.

As a result of these differences, they developed the first-ever asymmetrical spikes to cater to the specific needs and the role of each foot, and to build on the fact that long-sprint races are won in the curves. Similar to a race car having different suspension on the left and right sides to race in the curves, adidas created different shoes to build on the fact that Wariner uses his left foot for stabilization and his right foot for propulsion.

First Ever Carbon Nanotubes Full-Length Plate

Leveraging new innovations from the plastics industry, adidas applied materials only previously used in the automotive and aerospace industries to design a carbon nanotubes reinforced full-length plate (nanoplate). This thinner and stronger one piece, full-length plate provides Wariner more stability, comfort, better torsion, safety and increased flexibility while minimizing the energy loss.

Mechanical and chemical bonds with the microscopically tiny nanotubes increase the structural integrity and durability of the plate, allowing adidas to build one continual flexible piece as opposed to the previous three-piece design, which included metal screw-in spikes and multiple fold points adhered together by cement. The new full-length plate measures about 1/3 the thickness of Jeremy’s previous spike and weighs 50 percent less, making it the lightest spike ever created by adidas.

With less material between his foot and the track, the new plate allows Jeremy’s feet to be closer to the ground, therefore promoting more natural movement of the foot. The material’s defining physical properties result in increased flexibility, torsion and less energy loss as Jeremy’s foot comes off the track.

New adidas Progressive-Compression Spike

Acting like a piston on the track, the progressive-compression spike design innovation is exclusive to adidas. Traditional spikes cut into the track material causing athletes to exert unnecessary energy with each stride as they pull the spike back out of the track. The revolutionary spike on Jeremy’s shoe allows him to compress the track, thus riding its surface like a piston instead of digging in and out of it with each stride and wasting valuable energy. The tapered grooves of the progressive-compression spike provide the best penetration/compression ratio, thus optimizing the spring-like elastic property of the track surface.

Split Upper with POWERWEB Bands

The split upper in the forefoot allowed adidas to better tailor the shoe to hold Jeremy’s foot, creating a glove-like fit. The POWERWEB bands on the back of the shoe are similar to the look and functionality of adidas TECHFIT™POWERWEB apparel Jeremy races in. POWERWEB bands mimic the skeletal-muscles complex and are placed on the shoe to wrap and hold his heel and midfoot for increased support and stability.

Jeremy’s traditional “Pookie” nickname is replaced on the adidas Lone Star with a new logo of the letter W stylized as a crown and illustrating Jeremy as the undefeated champion. The name of the shoe, Lone Star, comes to life with an outline of the state of Texas on the tongue.

Cutters are an American company that have made their name and built their reputation by producing top quality professional gloves for baseball and American Football.

Now they have used their expertise and quality designs to create a range of golf gloves.

The gloves are made from a combination of re-engineered ultra thin C-TACKTM performance grip material and premium Grade A Cabretta leather which gives the glove a very soft, comfortable feel with an exceptionally strong grip.

The C-TACKTM grip is placed on the thumb and three finger tips, as well as to the side of the palm to allow for perfect slip-free grip for all types of golf swing. Getting used to the glove I realised how this helped me hold the club with less muscle tension.

This is a great improvement for someone relatively new to the game like myself, though would be as useful to a seasoned pro.

I have used the C-TACKTM Humid over the past couple of weeks and found the grip to be excellent.

Synthetic Ice Brings Olympic Experience to North Carolina Kids

Ice Rink Engineering is making it possible for kids to enjoy hands-on hockey play this summer at the Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, N.C. The Marbles Kids Museum will be opening their "Marbles Olympics" summer exhibit, featuring the EZ Glide 350(TM) synthetic ice rink as "Center Ice" on July 12. The games will take place through August 24.

gold medal in the 800-meter with a time of 2:02.90 at the PIAA Class AAA

also won the 800-meter event at the 2008 National Scholastic Indoor

    Price has maintained a 99.28 average in the classroom, placing her in
the top five percent of her class. Easton Area's Homecoming and Prom Queen,

America and the Key Club, she also participates in multiple

Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year: Kyle Skipworth

In its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes,
The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, today
announced senior catcher Kyle Skipworth of Patriot High School
(Riverside, Calif.) as its 2007-08 Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year.

   Skipworth becomes only the second student-athlete from California ever
to win Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year recognition, joining
former NFL quarterback and Major League Baseball reliever Chad Hutchinson
(1994-95, Torrey Pines HS/San Diego).

   The award, which recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high
standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on
and off the field, distinguishes Skipworth as the nation's best high school
baseball player. A national advisory board comprised of sportswriters and
sport-specific experts from around the country helped select Skipworth from
the more than 477,000 high school baseball players nationwide. Skipworth is
now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the
Year award, to be presented at a special afternoon ceremony prior to The
ESPY Awards in July.

   The 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior catcher produced a .543 batting average,
51 runs scored, 47 RBI and 13 home runs, leading the Warriors to a 27-3
record and the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section
Division IV state postseason tournament semifinals. A projected first-round
pick in this week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft,
Skipworth compiled a 1.117 slugging percentage and .627 on-base percentage
this spring. An Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic selection,
the left-handed-hitting Skipworth set a California state record when he put
together a streak of 18 consecutive hits in 18 official at-bats this
spring. He reached safely in 25 straight plate appearances during the span.

   In only his second season as a full-time catcher after playing left
field and third base as an underclassman, Skipworth was rated the No. 1
throwing arm at last summer's 17-and-Under World Wood Bat Association
(WWBA) Championships in Georgia. He gunned down more than 70-percent of
would-be base-stealers in his career.

   A 2007 Area Codes Games participant, Skipworth helped the 2007 USA
Baseball Junior National Team to a bronze medal at the COPABE "AAA" Pan
American Junior Championships in Mexico. During the offseason, the Jurupa
Little League product also played for the Angels Elite Scout Team and the
ABD Bulldogs travel team. In the summer of 2006, Skipworth was a standout
for the gold-medal-winning Team USA squad at the COPABE "AA" (Under-16)
Youth Pan American Championships in Venezuela.

   Skipworth has maintained a 3.81 GPA in the classroom. He donates his
time generously to the Jurupa PONY League Pinto Division as a volunteer

   Skipworth has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball at
the Arizona State University this fall, but is also projected as a

Japanese companies unveil high-tech swimsuits

Three Japanese sportswear manufacturers have launched high-tech swimsuits to compete with the new Speedo LZR Racer.

The swimsuits were introduced Friday by Mizuno Corp., Asics Corp. and Descente Ltd. in a presentation to the Japan Swimming Federation.

The federation has contracts requiring Japanese national team swimmers to wear suits made by domestic companies.

The Speedo LZR racer has made a huge splash, with 37 out of 41 world records set since February made by swimmers wearing the suit. In previous Olympic years, about five world records are typically set leading up to the Games.

Last month the Canadian men's 400-metre medley relay team wore the new suits at the CN Swimming Trials in Montreal and cut three full seconds off the Canadian record.

Critics of the suit claim that it makes swimmers more buoyant, but FINA, the international swimming governing body, has ruled that Speedo's design is legal. The group will meet on June 3 in Lausanne, Switzerland, to rule on the new competing suits.

Mizuno's new design uses materials that put pressure on the body, decreasing water resistance. Mizuno is the swimsuit supplier for Japanese Olympic breaststroke champion Kosuke Kitajima.

Descente unveiled three new designs, while Asics unveiled two, including one that triples the amount of pressure on the legs.

The new Japanese suits will be seen at the Japan Open in Tokyo from June 6-8.

Nike, Adidas, and Italian swimsuit manufacturer Diana are also working on designs to compete with the LZR Racer.

Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year: Teresa Noyola

        California standout named nation's top high school performer

In its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes,
The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, today
announced senior midfielder Teresa Noyola of Palo Alto High School
(Palo Alto, Calif.) as its 2007-08 Gatorade National Girls Soccer
Player of the Year.

  The award, which recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high
standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on
and off the field, distinguishes Noyola as the nation's best high school
girls soccer player. A national advisory board comprised of sportswriters
and sport-specific experts from around the country helped select Noyola
from the more than 337,000 high school girls soccer players nationwide.
Noyola is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Female High School
Athlete of the Year award, to be presented at a special afternoon ceremony
prior to The ESPY Awards in July.

  The 5-foot-2 senior midfielder scored 18 goals and passed for seven
assists in just 16 games this spring, leading the Vikings (14-6-2) to the
second round of the CIF Division II Central Coast Section postseason. The
first-ever player to be named Youth, Scholar-Athlete and High School Player
of the Year in the same year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America, Noyola is also the first-ever two-time PARADE Magazine Player of
the Year. Noyola, who concluded her high school career with 40 goals and 27
assists, also competes for the prestigious Mountain View/Los Altos Mercury
Soccer Club program, having led her squad to three United States Youth
Soccer State Cup titles.

  Noyola, who was born in Mexico and moved to Palo Alto at age three, has
maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom and is a National Merit Scholarship
Finalist, as well as a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar
Finalist. She volunteers on behalf of El Molino -- a youth camp in Mexico
-- helping to restore the endangered Lake Patzcuaro habitat, volunteering
at an educational services and activities center, and leading the formation
of the area's first girls' soccer team for ages 6 through 12.
